It is sometimes argued that students should be required to undertake voluntary work in their community as a mandatory element of secondary schooling. I strongly agree with this view, as such a policy would foster social responsibility in young people and equip them with valuable practical skills.

The primary reason for supporting compulsory community service is that it cultivates a sense of civic duty at an impressionable age. When teenagers are exposed to the challenges faced by the elderly, the disadvantaged, or the environment, they develop empathy that classroom lessons alone cannot provide. In my own country, for instance, schools that introduced mandatory volunteering reported that students became noticeably more considerate and community-minded, an outcome that benefits society as a whole.

A further justification is the range of transferable skills that such work develops. Organising a charity event or assisting at a local shelter requires teamwork, communication, and time management — competencies that are highly prized by universities and employers alike. Consequently, students who volunteer are often better prepared for adult life than those whose education is confined to academic study.

Admittedly, some may contend that forcing students to volunteer undermines the very spirit of altruism. However, I would argue that once young people experience the satisfaction of helping others, initial reluctance typically gives way to genuine enthusiasm.

In conclusion, although compulsion may seem counter-intuitive, requiring community service in schools would nurture responsible citizens and build practical abilities. For these reasons, I firmly believe the benefits far outweigh any drawbacks.
