Free sample ยท How writing is scored (the 4 criteria)
IELTS Writing is marked on four equal criteria: Task Achievement (did you answer fully?), Coherence & Cohesion (is it organised and linked?), Lexical Resource (vocabulary), and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Your band is the average.
Why people plateau at 6.5: usually not vocabulary โ it's Task Achievement (not answering every part) and Coherence (paragraphs without a clear central idea). Fix those two first.
Every body paragraph should have one clear topic sentence, then explanation, then a specific example. Examiners scan for that shape.
