IELTS vs PTE Academic: Which Should You Take?

By Lumi English Academy · Updated July 2026

Both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are accepted for university, skilled migration and visas in Australia, the UK, Canada and beyond. They test the same four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — but the experience is very different. Here's how to choose.

The quick answer

If you are nervous speaking to a person, type faster than you write by hand, and want your result quickly, PTE Academic usually suits you better. If you prefer a human examiner for speaking and are comfortable with paper-style reading, IELTS may feel more natural. Neither is universally "easier" — it depends on your strengths.

Where each test is harder

PTE feels harder if…

You dislike multitasking. PTE is integrated — one task scores several skills, and you must speak clearly into a microphone while others do the same around you. Tasks like Re-tell Lecture and Write from Dictation reward speed and accuracy under time pressure.

IELTS feels harder if…

You get anxious with a live examiner, or your handwriting slows you down on paper. IELTS Writing is hand-marked, so a clear structure and range of grammar matter a lot, and Speaking depends on holding a natural conversation.

Score conversion (approx): PTE 58–64 ≈ IELTS 6.5 · PTE 65–72 ≈ IELTS 7.0 · PTE 79+ ≈ IELTS 8.0. Always confirm the exact requirement with the university or immigration authority you're applying to.

Cost and acceptance

Prices are similar (often US$200–260 depending on country). Acceptance is now very broad for both, including student visas and skilled-migration points. The one thing to check: a few specific institutions or professional bodies still prefer one test — always verify before you book.
