How to Score 79+ in PTE Academic: A Complete 2026 Guide
A PTE Academic score of 79+ (the "superior" band, roughly IELTS 8.0) opens the door to most universities and skilled-migration streams. The good news: PTE is a highly predictable, computer-scored test, so with the right strategy you can improve fast. Here's exactly how to get there.
1. How PTE scoring actually works
PTE Academic gives you an overall score from 10 to 90, plus a score for each of the four skills — Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. The single most important thing to understand is that PTE is an integrated-skills test: one task can contribute to more than one skill. For example, Read Aloud feeds both your Reading and Speaking scores. That means a handful of tasks quietly do double duty — and mastering them lifts several scores at once.
Two more scoring facts change how you should practise: the AI rewards fluency and content over perfection, and three task types carry negative marking (Reading and Listening multiple-choice with multiple answers, and Highlight Incorrect Words), so guessing hurts you there.
2. The high-value tasks to master first
Don't spread yourself evenly across all 22 task types. These few give the biggest return:
- Read Aloud — scores Reading + Speaking. Read smoothly at a steady pace; fluency matters more than getting every word perfect.
- Repeat Sentence — scores Listening + Speaking. Start speaking immediately and chunk the sentence into 3–4 word groups.
- Write from Dictation — scores Listening + Writing, and every correct word earns marks. Word-for-word, it's the highest-value item in the test.
- Fill in the Blanks (Reading) — scores Reading + Writing with no negative marking, so answer every gap using grammar and collocation clues.
3. Templates that score
PTE rewards clear, predictable structure. Two templates alone can add several points:
Describe Image (40 seconds)
Write Essay (200–300 words, 20 minutes)
Body 1: reason + explanation + example.
Body 2: reason + explanation + example.
Conclusion: restate position + recommendation.
You'll find a full template and model answer for every one of the 22 task types in our free PTE course modules.
4. Mistakes that quietly cost you points
- Pausing on Read Aloud. Long silences wreck your fluency score. If you stumble on a word, keep going — never repeat it.
- Guessing on negative-marking tasks. On the two multiple-answer tasks and Highlight Incorrect Words, only select what you're sure of.
- Writing two sentences in Summarize Written Text. It must be one sentence — two drops your form score to zero.
- Ignoring spelling in Write from Dictation. A word you heard correctly but spelled wrong scores nothing.
