How to Get IELTS Band 7: 9 Tips That Actually Work

By Lumi English Academy · Updated July 2026

The jump from 6.5 to 7.0 frustrates thousands of test-takers. The reason is almost never "not enough vocabulary" — it's a handful of specific, fixable habits. Here are nine that move the needle.

Writing

1. Answer every part of the question

Band 7 requires you to fully address the task. If the prompt has two questions, answer both — clearly, in separate paragraphs. Half-answers cap you at 6.

2. One idea per paragraph, with an example

Each body paragraph should open with a clear topic sentence, explain it, then give a specific example. Examiners scan for this shape as evidence of Coherence.

3. Stop overusing linking words

"Moreover… Furthermore… In addition…" at the start of every sentence actually lowers your score. Use one linker per idea, then vary the sentence.

Speaking

4. Extend every answer with "why" and "example"

Short answers signal a low band. For each question, add a reason and a quick example. "Do you like cooking? Yes — because it relaxes me after work, for example I make biryani every Sunday."

5. Use a range of tenses on purpose

Band 7 needs grammatical range. Deliberately mix a present perfect ("I've always enjoyed…"), a conditional ("If I had more time, I would…") and a past narrative into Part 2.

6. Fluency beats a perfect accent

Examiners reward smooth, connected speech, not a "native" accent. Practise speaking in longer chunks without long pauses — hesitation costs more than a small mispronunciation.

Reading & Listening

7. Learn to skim and scan, don't read every word

You don't have time to read passages fully. Skim for the main idea, then scan for the keywords in each question. Practise until it's automatic.

8. Watch the spelling in Listening

A correct answer spelled wrong is marked wrong. Common traps: dates, plurals, and names spelled out letter by letter. Slow down when you transfer answers.

9. Do timed, full-length practice — then review

The single biggest gain comes from realistic timed practice followed by honest review of why you missed each mark. Practising without reviewing just repeats your mistakes.
