MET Speaking: How to Prepare, with Sample Answers

By Lumi English Academy · Updated July 2026

MET Speaking is rated by examiners on how clearly and fluently you communicate — not on having a perfect accent. With a little structure and practice, it's very manageable. Here's how it works and how to prepare.

How it's rated

Examiners assess your fluency, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and how well you complete each task. The goal is clear, connected communication — keep talking, stay on topic, and support your ideas.

The task types (and how to answer)

Describe a picture

Describe what you see in detail. Cover people, objects, actions and the overall setting.

"This picture shows a busy market. In the foreground, several people are buying fruit and vegetables from a stall. On the right, a vendor is weighing something for a customer. The atmosphere looks lively and a little crowded — probably a weekend morning."

Give your opinion

State your view and give at least two reasons.

"In my opinion, public libraries are still very important. First, they give everyone free access to books and the internet, which is essential for students from low-income families. Second, they provide a quiet, safe space to study that many people don't have at home."

Persuade or recommend

Be polite but convincing — acknowledge the other side, then give strong reasons.

"I understand the concern about cost, but I'd strongly recommend keeping the after-school programme. It gives students a safe place to go, improves their grades, and is very popular with parents. Cutting it could do more harm than the savings are worth."
