What this task is

You read a passage of up to 300 words and write a summary in ONE single sentence of 5–75 words. The one-sentence rule is where most people lose easy marks.

How to score well

Template

“While [main point / first idea], [second key idea], which means that [conclusion].”

Sample & model answer

Sample

Summarise the passage in one sentence (5–75 words).

Passage (paraphrased): Bees are vital pollinators, but their numbers are falling due to pesticides, habitat loss and disease. Scientists warn that without action, food production could be seriously affected.

Model answer

“Although bees are essential pollinators for global food production, their populations are declining because of pesticides, habitat loss and disease, which scientists warn could threaten food supplies unless action is taken.” (36 words, one sentence.)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Writing two sentences (form score drops to zero)
  • Going over 75 words or under 5
  • Copying whole chunks instead of summarising
Lumi tip: After writing, count your full stops — there must be exactly one.
